“Wildcat Fire in area close and thick smoke and road closures. Had to turn around and leave, missing Mt Rainier, which was so sad!!!! They wouldn’t return our money as we’d need to request via email before 7 days and our 18 camping travel had just begun. ”

Victoria L 1 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“No service, no showers, stay cut short due to wildfire Would 100% stay here again. Secluded enough campsite and beautiful stars ”

About

Lodgepole Campground sits along the American River in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington's Northern Cascades, providing a straightforward, river-side base for anglers, hikers and paddlers. The site offers 33 campsites each set up to accommodate either tents or RVs and each site comes with a picnic table; vault toilets and drinking water are provided, but there are no electrical hookups. The river beside the campground supports rainbow, brook and cutthroat trout, making fishing a primary draw, and the cold current also makes for brisk swimming and a scenic backdrop for rafting runs. Several trailheads are close by, including routes to Crow Lake, Swamp Lake, Cougar Valley and Union Creek, and the Pacific Crest Trail runs through the broader area for longer backpacking trips. The surrounding forest transitions from glaciated alpine peaks to drier shrub-steppe country across the Cascade Crest, and nearby Goat Rocks Wilderness with Gilbert Peak at 8,184 feet is reachable for those looking to climb to higher terrain. Practicalities are straightforward but important to note: sites are reservable through Recreation.gov (this location has limited on-site staff, so call (661) 702-1420 for general questions), and the campground's cancellation and refund rules are tied to that system. Cancellations made more than two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee; canceling the day before or on arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee, and one-night reservations canceled will forfeit the entire amount paid. No-shows are charged a $20 service fee and lose the first night's rate and taxes. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends; in the event of an emergency closure all fees will be refunded. Beyond the immediate river access and trails, the national forest offers many other pursuits biking, boating, horseback riding, OHV use, winter sports, wildlife viewing and more so plan seasonally and check with Recreation.gov or the phone contact about current access and services before you go. Note: this Lodgepole Campground is in Washington's Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, not Sequoia National Park.
