Lyman Lake Campsites are a small, lakefront cluster of 10 primitive sites on a 67-acre inland lake within the Munising/Rapid River Manistique districts of Hiawatha National Forest. The shoreline is ringed with hardwoods and pines and the campsites sit close to the water, which means the lake can feel busy when all sites are occupied. Fishing is one of the main draws here anglers target bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, largemouth bass and northern pike but remember a Michigan fishing license is required. A public back-in boat launch with parking sits between sites 6 and 7, and swimming quality varies considerably by site: sites 2, 3 and 5 offer good swimming areas; sites 4 and 6 are fair; and sites 1, 7, 8, 9 and 10 have poor swimming access. Basic services are minimal: there is no drinking water at the campground, and primitive toilets are provided at sites 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9. For local questions, call the ranger districts at (906) 474-6442 or (906) 387-2512. All ten campsites accommodate both RVs and tents, but the sites differ widely in size, slope and vehicle maneuverability, so pick your spot with your rig in mind. Site capacities are posted: sites 1, 7 and 10 are sized for up to 8 people; sites 2 4, 6, 8 and 9 can hold up to 16 people; and site 5 is the largest, rated for 24. Many sites have modest rockwork and split-rail edging (notably 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9) to repair shorelines; sites 1 and 2 include stairway access down steep approaches. Site 3 and 5 are among the more open, trailer-friendly sites (site 5 especially large with good road access), while sites 6 and 4 slope or have limited turning radius that make trailers difficult; site 7 is small and sloped and is better for tents. Site 10 sits a little apart on its own access road for extra privacy. Beyond the immediate shoreline you'll find horse, bike and hiking trails nearby, and within about a mile there are bait shops, trailheads, a fishing pier and kayak/canoe rentals; groceries, gas and basic supplies are available about seven miles northeast in the Thunder Lake area. The campground is reached from Forest Roads 2218 and 2436 off the Forest Highway/County Road network east of Rapid River contact the ranger district for the latest information on fees, seasons and reservations.
