“Peaceful except for the mosquitoes 🦟 lol ”
“Getting real tired of how the forest is being sold out for money. The people that use these sites now trash the area around them. I’m also getting tired of ATVs pulling in and having picnics. You’re turning the forest into a theme park for people from the city.”

RAPID RIVER/MANISTIQUE RANGER DISTRICT
Open in Google Maps ↗
Carr Lake Campsite occupies a single, fairly roomy clearing on the 16-acre Carr Lake, set among hardwoods and pines on the Hiawatha National Forest's Munising/Rapid River Manistique districts. There is only one campsite here, configured to accommodate both tents and an RV; the grassy site measures roughly 70 by 40 feet and is large enough for two families or groups up to 16 people. The setting is quiet and primitive: there are no toilets and no drinking water, parking is limited, and access to the water is carry-in only via a small boat slide built for lightweight craft. Fishing is the main draw at the lake and nearby Carr Creek expect largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and the occasional brook or brown trout in the lake, with good brook and brown trout fishing in the creek and Michigan fishing licenses are required. Swimming is generally rated poor here, but visitors can still enjoy boating, berry picking and wildlife viewing in and around the site. Reaching the site requires a short drive on forest and county roads north of Cooks (the area is about 12 miles west of Manistique on US-2), with a final quarter-mile spur to the lakeside clearing; be prepared for gravel roads and limited roadside signage. Within roughly a mile of several campsites in this district you'll find trailheads for horse, bike and hiking trails, bait shops, a fishing pier, and outfitters offering kayak/canoe rentals; groceries, gas, ice and basic camping supplies are available about five miles northeast in the Thunder Lake area along County Road 437. Because Carr Lake is a rustic, single-site location with no water or sanitary facilities, check current road and site conditions, seasonal availability, fees or reservation policies before you go by calling the local office at (906) 474-6442 or the general information line at (906) 387-2512.
