What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (111 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Wonderful campground. Close to a beautiful creek. Lots of ATVs in the area so there is noise from those. ”

Janet C 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful campground along the South Tongue River. Good wildlife viewing at the campground and easy access to nearby hiking trails and additional fishing spots.”

Stephen A 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful campground! Campsites near river are perfect settings to walk and see wildlife. Campsites near host very nice and helpful. Bathrooms kept pleasantly clean, and could smell the bleach! Always appreciate a clean rest room!! I would definitely recommend this campground!”

About

Tie Flume Campground sits at about 8,400 feet just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14) near Burgess Overlook and the Woodrock area, on the banks of the South Tongue River where a stand of lodgepole pine screens sites from the road and granite peaks rise in the distance. The campground contains 26 single-family sites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Visitors will find accessible vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection on site, and the campground allows two non-towed vehicles per site (the basic fee includes the first vehicle while a second vehicle is charged $9.00 per day at the campground). Firewood bundles are available from the campground host. Access is via Forest Road 26/16 off US-14 west of Dayton, placing Tie Flume within easy driving distance of the Bighorn Scenic Byway without requiring remote backcountry travel. Recreation options radiate outward from the campground: short hikes and longer trail routes climb into the Bighorn range and provide access to parts of the Cloud Peak Wilderness, while nearby jeep roads and designated off-road vehicle trails are popular with motorized users. Sibley Lake, a short drive away, is open to non-motorized boats and features an accessible fishing dock where anglers pursue rainbow, brown and brook trout; the surrounding rivers and creeks also offer fishing and creekside walks. History is visible in the landscape here remnants of old splash dams and the tie flumes that once supplied railroad ties dot the riverbanks near the campground and interpretive opportunities extend to Shell Falls Visitor Center about 18 miles southwest and the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite near Shell, where Middle Jurassic tracks about 167 million years old are exposed. Tie Flume is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com); if you reserve through recreation.gov note that refund requests are subject to a $10 processing fee and that the non-refundable reservation fee retained by the contractor will not be returned by the campground concessionaire.
