FOREST ROAD 235

Dead Swede Campground sits at about 8,400 feet along the South Tongue River just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14), east of Burgess Junction on Forest Road 26 roughly a 36-mile drive from Dayton. The site is set among a stand of lodgepole pines with granite peaks of the Bighorn range rising nearby, and its 20 campsites are configured for both tents and RVs (all 20 sites accept both). Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill; two sites are designed for accessibility. Visitors will find accessible vault toilets, potable drinking water, and trash collection on site. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site (the first vehicle is included in the basic fee; an additional vehicle is charged $9 per day at the campground), and firewood bundles can be purchased from the campground host. The campground is managed by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com); if you reserve through recreation.gov be aware that refund requests incur a $10 processing fee retained by the reservation contractor and the non-refundable reservation fee is not returned by the concessionaire. The immediate area is a practical base for a wide range of outdoor pursuits: the South Tongue River and nearby Sibley Lake (open to non-motorized craft) offer accessible shoreline fishing and an angler's dock where you can target rainbow, brown and brook trout, while a network of off-road vehicle trails and scenic jeep roads leaves directly into the surrounding backcountry. Hikers can pick routes that range from short creekside loops to long approaches into the Cloud Peak Wilderness; horseback rides, guided fishing trips, and off-road rentals are available from nearby lodges such as Bear Lodge and Elk View Inn. For history and geology, remnants of the old tie flume operations dot the nearby river corridors and the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite near Shell displays Middle Jurassic footprints, while Shell Falls Visitor Center about 21 miles southwest provides interpretive trails and exhibits. Because Dead Swede sits at high elevation, conditions can change quickly; check availability, seasonal openings and reservation/cancellation details before you go.
