“Great campground, big trees offered some shade, spots were spread out enough to provide some privacy. Could use coat hooks in the outhouses, which could stand to have been cleaned a little more often. ”

Wapiti Campground sits along the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway about 30 miles west of Cody and roughly 22 miles east of Yellowstone's east entrance, right on the north side of U.S. 14/16/20 beside the North Fork of the Shoshone River. At about 6,000 feet elevation the campground is shaded by cottonwood and juniper and backed by the steep Absaroka volcanic cliffs, a setting that draws a wide variety of wildlife grizzly bears, elk, deer, bison, moose, foxes, coyotes and bald eagles are all regularly seen. Immediate recreation around the campground centers on hiking, scenic drives and wildlife viewing, while fly-fishers work the North Fork for rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Less than a quarter-mile east, the Wapiti Wayside provides interpretive material about grizzlies and local ecology, and nearby Pahaska Tepee (open for tours between Memorial Day and Labor Day) plus the town of Cody and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center offer additional cultural and visitor services. The campground has 40 sites in all: 19 are configured to accept both RVs and tents and 21 are RV-designated sites. Sites 1 21 are the electric sites and provide both 15-amp and 30-amp hookups; sites 22 40 are non-electric. You'll find accessible single- and double-family sites, and every campsite includes a picnic table, campfire ring and a metal food storage locker. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, and campers may gather firewood in the area. Because large wildlife frequent the corridor, use the provided food-storage lockers and follow any posted wildlife-safety guidance. The site is easy to reach by car from Cody along Sheridan Avenue as it becomes the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, and it sits between Elk Fork Campground to the west and Big Game Campground to the east. For current fees, reservation rules and seasonal opening dates, check the Forest Service's Wapiti Campground information before you go.
