Hunter Peak Campground sits along State Highway 296 (the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway) about 60 miles northeast of Cody and just a few miles south of the junction with the Beartooth Highway. The campground lies on the banks of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River at roughly 6,500 feet, shaded by a mixed conifer stand and offering direct access to the river for anglers chasing rainbow and native cutthroat trout. The Clarks Fork Trailhead is immediately across the highway, so hikers can step from camp onto longer backcountry routes; the road network also makes Hunter Peak a convenient jumping-off point for the Beartooth Highway drive and for visiting Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance, roughly 24 miles away. Beyond the immediate site, Shoshone National Forest supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits auto touring, biking, boating, climbing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, swimming, wildlife viewing and winter sports so the campground serves as a quiet base for diverse day trips. This is a very small, low-service facility with eight single-family campsites in total; all 8 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring. Basic services on site include vault toilets, hand-pumped water, trash collection, and an on-site host; firewood may be gathered locally and fuel and sundries can be purchased in the nearby community of Crandall. Reservation options exist for sites 5, 6, 7 and 8 check the online availability system for specifics and additional questions about fees, seasonal openings or any access advisories are best answered by the Forest Service before you go. Wildlife is abundant (grizzly bear, deer and elk are known to use the area), so come prepared to follow local food- and garbage-storage requirements and standard bear-safety practices.
