“Beautiful quiet campground in the Northwoods. The beach is minutes from your site. The water is clean and beach us Sandy. Can’t wait to go back again!”

Anvil Lake Campground sits in a mature stand of sugar maple, hemlock and white pine roughly 1,740 feet above sea level, perched above a clear 377-acre lake with a wide sandy beach. The lake is open to both motorized and non-motorized boating and is a reliable place to fish for walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish; swimmers gather at the beach in summer and the picnic area includes a historic stone-and-log shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Outdoors enthusiasts will find direct trail access here: the Anvil National Recreation Trail begins at the campground and links to the Nicolet North Trail, Hidden Lakes Trail, Franklin Lake Interpretive Trail and the Luna White Deer system, creating about 40 miles of multi-use trail, most of which allows mountain biking. In winter the main trail is groomed for classic and skate cross-country skiing and has a local reputation once used for USA Olympic training though the campground itself is not open during the winter months. Wildlife viewing is common throughout the area, so bring binoculars and store food appropriately. The campground has 17 sites in all: 14 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites, each outfitted with a picnic table and a fire ring with grill; accessible vault toilets and drinking water are available on site. Sites are a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served (check the current breakdown and fees online before you arrive), and the campground is suitable as a family base camp or a staging point for trail and lake activities; Eagle River's services are about a 9-mile drive west on State Highway 70. Expect a fairly wooded, quiet setting with close access to water and trails, and consult the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest pages for up-to-date reservation details, seasonal openings and any area alerts before you go.
