About

Panhandle Campground sits on the east bank of the Pend Oreille River in the Colville National Forest, in a heavily forested stretch where a thick middlestory of firs and cedars gives most sites a private feel and keeps campsites tucked into the trees. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 12, and SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 12 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites the loop is small but roomy enough to accommodate large RVs while still feeling like a riverside tent camp; most sites are within a short walk of the water and each provides a picnic table. Facilities are straightforward and practical: there's drinking water, vault toilets, and a dedicated swimming area right along the campground. An on-site boat ramp makes launching easy for boats and towboats; the Pend Oreille is wide and deep enough here for power boating and water skiing, with a 35 mph speed limit in the area. Recreation at Panhandle centers on the river and the pocket wetlands at the south end of the campground canoeists and anglers will find calm backwaters and main-channel opportunities for bass and trout, and birders will appreciate the diversity the marshy edges attract. The campground is a good home base for exploring about 30 miles of forest roads with frequent scenic overlooks and chances to spot wildlife, and it sits in a landscape shaped by Ice Age glaciers where the Pend Oreille flows north roughly 130 miles into Canada before joining the Columbia. The site is accessed from Newport to the southwest via U.S. Highway 2 and LeClerc Road (roughly 32 miles north of town); current fees, reservation policies, and seasonal openings are set by the Colville National Forest check the forest office or recreation.gov for up-to-date information before you go.
