Soapstone Campground sits at about 8,200 feet on the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway in the Uinta Mountains, beside the Lower Provo River where willow thickets edge the water and stands of pine, fir and quaking aspen shade the loops. The river is an easy walk from most sites and is known for trout fishing, while Soapstone Basin nearby offers miles of off-highway vehicle trails for riders of many skill levels. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders will find trailheads and linking routes along the byway, and several paths off the road provide access into the High Uintas Wilderness and to a string of alpine lakes and viewpoints scattered through this part of northeastern Utah. Because of the elevation expect cooler temperatures and variable weather late and early in the season; the byway is reached from Kamas via Highway 150 (Mirror Lake Scenic Byway), roughly 15 miles from town and accessible from the Salt Lake City/Heber corridors. The campground has 33 sites in all: fee categories include 30 single sites ($29, capacity 8), 2 double sites ($58, capacity 16) and 1 triple site ($86, capacity 24); physically, 23 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, 3 are RV-only and 7 are tent-only. Roads and parking spurs are paved, each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring, and the loop is served by vault toilets and trash collection there is no potable water on site, so come prepared. Day-use/picnic fee is $15, extra vehicles are $10, and payments accepted are cash, check or Scan & Pay through the recreation.gov app. Reservations and changes go through Recreation.gov (or 1-877-444-6777); a $10 service fee applies for changes or cancellations, late cancellations typically forfeit the first night's fee, no-shows can be assessed an additional $20 fee, and refund requests must be made within 14 days of departure. For facility-specific questions call (385) 273-1100.
