“Campground is quite and a nice atmosphere. Hosts were nice, camp sites were very clean. The only negative comment is it was almost impossible to use the Vault Toilets without throwing up, the needed to have treatment and water added to them.”

Whiting Campground sits in Maple Canyon at about 5,400 feet, roughly three miles east of Mapleton off Highway 147/400 North and within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. A dense, shady stand of maple and cottonwood trees lines the sites, coloring the canyon in bright tones come fall and sheltering summer wildflowers; a small perennial creek runs through the campground, adding a cooling soundtrack on warm days. The Maple Canyon Trail begins nearby and opens onto a small network of routes used by hikers, mountain bikers, dirt-bikers and horseback riders, so most visitors come here for trail access and riding. The broader forest around Maple Canyon also supports fishing, auto touring, OHV use, wildlife viewing and other traditional National Forest activities if you want to explore beyond the immediate trail system. The campground has 27 sites in total: 22 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, three equestrian sites (each with hitching racks) and two glamping sites. Group camping is available in two large group sites one sized for about 100 people and the other for about 200 and both group areas include picnic tables, grills, campfire rings and concrete site pads; single and equestrian sites also have picnic tables, campfire rings and concrete pads. Vault toilets are provided. Fees are paid by cash, check or Scan & Pay through the Recreation.gov app: single sites are $29 (capacity 8), double sites $58 (capacity 16), glamping sites $111 (capacity 8; deposit required), group sites are $285 and $570 for the smaller and larger areas respectively, day-use picnicking in a site is $15, and extra vehicles are $10 each. Reservations and most changes are handled through Recreation.gov (phone 1-877-444-6777); note a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations, late cancellations generally forfeit the first night's fee, no-shows may be assessed a $20 fee and forfeiture of use fees, and refund requests must be made within 14 days of departure.
