Anna K ★ 4 · Jan 2020I specifically chose this campground for its proximity to the water from the campsite, but when we arrived in late July the reservoir was entirely dried up! The campsite and campgrounds were still very well maintained, quiet, and beautiful, but was definitely not what I expected sans water. We still enjoyed exploring what was essentially a prairie land instead and had a great time, but I definitely recommend researching the Wickiup Reservoir water levels during the season you're visiting so you won't be taken off guard like we were. Would love to return when we could enjoy some water activities in the future.
Paul K ★ 1 · Dec 2019Getting into the campsite was horrendous! The site is a pull through and the parking spot for the trailer was so uneven with overhanging branches scratched my trailer. I have a 20 ft rig so it wasnt the size of my trailer. The site was primitive so I should not have expected it to be paved. The reservoir was down which put it a couple of miles from our site. I now understand that this reservoir, Wickiup, has fluctuations in level. I will research my future campground selections more throughly.

Reservoir Campground is currently closed until further notice. When open, it sits directly on the shore of Wickiup Reservoir just off the Cascade Lakes Highway, about 58 miles southwest of Bend and a short drive east on Forest Road 44. The facility is small and straightforward: 24 sites in total, each set up to accommodate either tents or RVs/trailers, but without water or electrical hookups, so RV campers must arrive self-contained and everyone should bring their own drinking water. Sites come with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill, vault toilets are on site, and there's a boat ramp for direct access to the reservoir. Note that reservations are managed through Recreation.gov, and once a reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation. The reservoir is the real draw here both motorized and non-motorized boats are permitted, and the mix of relatively warm surface water with cooler deep channels makes for productive fishing; you can find brown trout, kokanee and Coho salmon, rainbow and brook trout, whitefish and chub. Swimming, canoeing and general boating are common from the campground shore, while the surrounding wetlands, mixed forests and rocky slopes create habitat for shorebirds, porcupine, deer, bats and the occasional black bear. Beyond the reservoir, the site provides a convenient jumping-off point for the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (a 66-mile scenic drive through the Cascades) and for day trips to Newberry National Volcanic Monument about a 45-minute drive where you can visit Lava River Cave and interpretive exhibits. More broadly, Deschutes National Forest around the campground supports hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, winter sports and other backcountry pursuits, so expect a mix of water-based recreation and forested trail access.
