Chinamen's Campground sits at the very north end of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, about 30 miles east of Helena, framed by the Big Belt and Elkhorn mountain ranges. The reservoir here is part of a much larger system that offers roughly 35,200 acres of water and 76 miles of shoreline, and the surrounding uplands support pronghorn, mule deer and white-tailed deer as well as specialty birds like Chestnut-collared Longspurs and Long-billed Curlews; a managed wildlife area at the reservoir's end even hosts colonies of terns and pelicans. Three nearby marinas (Goose Bay, Kim's and Yacht Basin) and Bureau of Reclamation facilities on the lake provide concrete boat launches, rental docks, small convenience stores and a seasonal visitor center, so you can easily stock up, launch a boat, or check current reservoir levels before heading out on the water. The campground itself offers 37 total campsites each listed for both RVs and tents but many sites are compact, and RVs longer than 20 feet may be difficult to fit comfortably. Gravel roads wind between sites that each include a picnic table and a metal fire ring; during the summer months you'll find vault toilets, potable water, trash service and a campground host on duty. Recreation is broad and seasonal: expect fishing for rainbow trout, perch, ling and walleye, paddling and quiet back-bay exploration by canoe or kayak, faster water sports and motorboating in summer, and ice fishing, ice boating and skating when the lake freezes. Fees are collected only during peak season (May 6 through Sept 10), access is available year-round, and for facility-specific questions or the latest campsite information call (406) 475-3920.
