People's Creek Recreation Area sits along a quiet cove on Wappapello Lake in the southeastern foothills of the Ozarks, where lightly wooded shorelines and sandy mooring areas fringe an 8,400-acre impoundment within a much larger 45,000-acre public project. The day-use area is set up for water-centered days: a two-lane boat ramp with a courtesy dock, an accessible fishing pier, and a swimming beach share the shoreline with a large picnic shelter and the start of the Lake View Trail. Anglers will find largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, white bass and channel catfish in the lake, and kayakers, boaters and swimmers routinely use this cove because of its easy access and sheltered water. On land, the recreation area connects you to several trail options the nearby Pine Ridge Nature Trail, Shell Lake Archery Trail (noted for its accessible design), and the Wappapello Wildflower Trail and greenhouse areas and wildlife viewers can reach the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge about 11.5 miles away or state parks within a half-hour to hour drive. The campground itself is divided into upper and lower sections with a mix of hookups and tent options; older listings show 38 lower sites with 50-amp electric and water and 19 upper full-service sites (50-amp electric, water and sewer), while current verified campsite data lists TOTAL CAMPSITES: 56 52 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites and 4 Tent Sites. People's Creek Lower is the only campground at Wappapello Lake with waterfront campsites, and a large sandy mooring area serves overnight boaters. Fees are posted as Full Service (50 Amp, Water, Sewer) $24.00; Limited Service (50 Amp, Water) $20.00; Walk-in Tent Sites (50 Amp, Water) $16.00. Accessible amenities, multiple trail options, extensive boating and fishing opportunities, and proximity to other regional parks make People's Creek a practical base for exploring this section of the St. Francis River watershed; from St. Louis most visitors head south on I-55 toward Highway 67 and then take D Highway south, while those coming from Poplar Bluff use Hwy 60 east and then Hwy T north to reach the area.
