About

Markham Springs Campground sits on the banks of the Black River in the southwestern corner of Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest, where a mix of tall ash, elm, maple and poplar trees shades campsites and trails. The site takes its name from M. J. Markham, who owned and ran a lumber mill here in the early 1900s; remnants of that history include the nearby mill and the Fuchs House, a five-bedroom concrete-and-native-stone home that is occasionally available to rent. Water features define the place: the Black River runs alongside the campground and supports boating, canoeing and kayaking, while a small pond on the property dates back to the 1800s. Anglers come here for bass, sunfish, walleye and catfish and will find space to fish from boats or the riverbank. Hikers can step onto the Markham Springs Trail System directly from camp Eagle Bluff Trail is a 1.5-mile loop that follows the river and is a reliable spot for birding and other wildlife viewing. The campground offers 52 sites spread among five loops Birch (11 sites), PINE (12 sites), Pavilion (1 site), River (15 sites) and Sycamore (13 sites) with a mix of single and double sites suitable for tents and RVs. Site types are specific: 40 sites accept both RVs and tents, 11 are RV-only, and there is 1 tent-only site; some of the sites near the river are intentionally primitive and sit in a wooded setting for a quieter riverside experience. Practical amenities include electric hookups, picnic tables, campfire rings with grills and lantern posts at many sites, plus accessible vault toilets, drinking water, showers and trash collection. The campground provides direct access to on-site recreation (river access, fishing, paddling and day hikes) while the wider Mark Twain National Forest supports additional pursuits such as auto touring, biking, boating, horseback riding and OHV use. The park description does not include fee, reservation or seasonal-availability details, so check the Forest Service or recreation.gov pages before you go; Markham Springs lies just a few miles west of Williamsville and roughly twenty-odd miles northwest of Poplar Bluff via the main highways.
