“Nice campground. Pretty scenery. Jake and Reggie (hosts) were friendly and helpful. Several tent only sites, but some can accommodate camper trailers. Water and vault toilets. I'd be happy to return. Some rain and coolish weather for September. ”

CRESCENT LAKE
Open in Google Maps ↗
Crescent Lake Campground sits on a wooded peninsula that projects into Crescent Lake within the remote reaches of Superior National Forest, about 23 miles inland from Lake Superior at Tofte via the Sawbill Trail and Forest Road 170 (The Grade). The site offers 33 campsites in total: 30 sites configured for both RVs and tents and three tent-only sites. Many campsites provide pleasing water views and a handful have direct shoreline access; one primitive backcountry campsite is reachable only by boat. Practical facilities include picnic tables, campfire grates, vault toilets and water pumps, plus a fishing pier inside the campground and a public boat ramp on the lake's northwest side. A few sites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis the campground information available here does not list fees or reservation windows, so plan to check current season dates, fee and reservation policies with the Superior National Forest/USDA Forest Service before you go. Recreation centers on the lake and the surrounding boreal forest: anglers will find walleye, northern pike and muskie, and motorized boats are allowed with no horsepower limit, though the lake is most suited to smaller fishing boats and similar craft. Beyond the shoreline, the forest's mix of white and red pines, spruce, balsam, birch and aspen supports abundant wildlife loons and bald eagles are common, and sightings of moose and black bear are possible and provides quiet hiking, birding and paddling opportunities. Crescent Lake also serves as a gateway to the broader offerings of Superior National Forest and the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; for supplies, showers, rental gear, bait and other services, Sawbill Canoe Outfitters operates a store about 13 miles from the campground. For maps, trail and route planning, or up-to-date conditions, consult the forest's recreation guides before heading out.
