“Ranger station has been unstaffed for months, did not put up reservation tags, so our group site was occupied by multiple families on arrival who also paid on site fees.”
“Only needed the site for one night for a group of 5. Site had more than enough space for 5 tents. Beautiful creek just a few steps from the campsite area. Campsite and bathroom was clean.”

Elk Creek Campground sits at the edge of Elk Meadow in a wide valley below the Sawtooth Range, about eight miles west of Stanley along State Highway 21 and then north on Forest Road 892 at milepost 123. The Forest Service lists this site as a single campsite a reservable group site that is actually made up of three smaller camping areas rated for both RV and tent use; when the group site is not reserved those smaller areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You'll drive on a paved road and parking spur to reach the loop, but note that campers must walk a few yards from the parking area to the individual campsites. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided and lodgepole pines offer partial shade, while summer wildflowers and nearby Elk Creek create the meadow-and-stream setting. Average summer temperatures tend to be cool, with highs near 78°F and nighttime lows around 40°F, so plan clothing and gear for chilly evenings. The campground is inside the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, so day-trip options extend well beyond the loop: the valley and surrounding mountains offer roughly 750 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and the Idaho Centennial Trail passes close by. Anglers will find many lakes and streams in the region and the Salmon River for rainbow and native Westslope cutthroat trout; Stanley and Redfish Lakes are within easy reach for boating, paddling and more fishing. Elk and other wildlife frequent the meadow, making it a good spot for bird and wildlife viewing, and the forested roads and scenic corridors invite auto touring and, seasonally, winter sports in higher elevations. Because this site is a single group campsite with limited amenities, check current reservation rules, fees and seasonal openings with Sawtooth National Forest before you go so you know whether to reserve the group site or plan to arrive early for a first-come space.
