“Location and view. It was amazing. The fishing and semi solitude was great.”

Peggy S 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“We had spot #6, and it was absolutely beautiful. Lake view, and we are in love with this campground. It wasn’t very close to other campsites so that was nice. Can’t wait to go back next year ”

Kathy W 5 · Aug 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful, well-kept, good smelling bathrooms, excellent shore fishing in the cool am's”

About

Baby Doe Campground sits on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake under a stand of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir, offering close-to-water campsites and ready access to alpine country. The campground's 48 sites are configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, with gravel or dirt parking spurs, and several sites built for accessibility. A gentle 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail loops along the shoreline from near the campground and links to the longer 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail that follows the lake from Sugar Loaf Dam to May Queen Campground; trail guides are available at the Molly Brown Campground trailhead about a mile south. Boating, sailing and canoeing are popular here anglers will find stocked cutthroat, rainbow, brown and lake trout and a public boat ramp sits roughly a mile south of Baby Doe. The Mount Massive Wilderness, including Colorado's second highest peak, is nearby for day hikes or longer backcountry trips, and scenic drives such as the Top of the Rockies Byway and Independence Pass are easily reached from the Leadville area. Facilities at Baby Doe are straightforward and family-oriented: each campsite includes a picnic table and campfire ring, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and hosts sell firewood on site; trash collection is available. Practical details to note before you arrive: an extra vehicle fee is $10, and the campground operates on a reservation/cancellation schedule cancellations made up to two days before your reservation incur a $10 cancellation fee, while cancelling the day before or on the day of arrival results in a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (including tax and applicable add-ons). One-night reservations cancelled will forfeit the entire amount paid; no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation end date; card refunds are returned to the original card, while check or cash payments are refunded by Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). Also be aware that unmanned aircraft systems (drones) are regulated on Forest Service lands and must follow applicable laws and Forest Service policy. To reach the campground from Leadville, head west on County Road 4 and follow County Road 9C toward Turquoise Lake the site is a short drive off the main route and is busiest in summer when lake and trail activities peak.
