“Loved this campground…hardly anyone around, very large and shady sites right next to the river. Perfect! ”

Lower Little Truckee Campground sits along the banks of the Little Truckee River at about 6,100 feet, where stands of lodgepole pine, aspen and juniper provide partial shade and a classic Sierra mountain feel. The facility has 15 single-family campsites each designed to take either a tent or an RV so the site mix is straightforward: all 15 accommodate both RVs and tents. Campsites come with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring, and a few sites give you a direct view down to the river. Practical amenities on site are basic but useful: vault toilets and potable drinking water are provided, and the Tahoe National Forest operates and maintains the campground. Because this is a mountain river location, seasonal weather and road conditions can affect access; check the Tahoe National Forest website or contact the forest office for up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal openings before you travel. The campground's location on Highway 89 about 11 miles north of Truckee and easily reached from the I-80/Truckee corridor makes it a convenient base for a broad range of activities. Anglers come specifically for rainbow and brown trout fishing in the Little Truckee River, and hikers and mountain bikers will find nearby trails to explore. Beyond the immediate campground, the Tahoe National Forest supports auto touring, boating, horseback riding, OHV use, hunting, swimming, picnicking and wildlife viewing, and several regional destinations are within easy driving distance: the services and historic sites of Truckee are roughly 10 minutes south, Lake Tahoe is about a 30-minute drive, Stampede Reservoir roughly 35 minutes southeast, and Sardine Lakes in the Lakes Basin about 40 minutes to the northwest via the Golden Chain. Other nearby recreation opportunities include the Donner Camp Interpretive Trail, the Overland Emigrant Commemorative Trail and the Prosser Pits OHV area, so whether you're after river fishing, trail time, or a short drive to mountain towns and reservoirs, Lower Little Truckee provides a simple, riverfront foothold in the region.
