Berger Campground sits at about 5,900 feet in the Packer Lake area of Tahoe National Forest, a short distance from the creek and the small, six-acre Packer Lake at the foot of the Sierra Buttes. The site is shaded by stands of lodgepole pine, cedar and fir and is laid out in two loops of single-family sites; there are nine campsites total, including 4 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites and 5 Tent Sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring, and vault toilets are provided; drinking water is not supplied, so plan to bring your own. The campground is operated and maintained by Forest Service staff and is reached from Highway 49 south of Sierraville in the Sardine Lake / Packer Lake area, with the feeling of a small, managed facility that puts you close to lakes and trailheads without a large developed footprint. Recreational options around Berger are extensive: the Pacific Crest Trail and a large network of Lakes Basin trails are within easy reach for hiking, biking and horseback riding, while Packer Lake and nearby Lower Sardine Lake are regularly stocked with rainbow and brook trout and are suitable for canoeing and shore fishing. The broader area supports boating (Gold Lake has a boat ramp), OHV riding, hunting and wildlife viewing; late-spring visitors often head for more vigorous water on the North Yuba River for whitewater rafting. Practical reservation details are handled by the Forest Service changes that include dates from your original reservation generally carry no change fee, but early departures may forfeit some or all recreation fees; where recorded at staffed facilities (Berger is staffed), a no-show is assessed a $20 fee and the first night's fee is forfeited. If you're running late, contact the facility so they can avoid recording a no-show; otherwise come prepared for basic amenities, high-elevation weather and backcountry access to fishing, riding and off-highway vehicle routes.
