“Quiet, peaceful campground with so many wonderful hiking options straight from the campground. The highway is nearby but you don't hear a lot of highway noise because there are not a ton of cars. Stunning natural beauty all around!”
“As always, our stay at Lakes Basin was fabulous! The campground is always well maintained. The hosts are beyond delightful (and so knowledgeable). And, you just can’t beat the pond!”
“Campground was very clean, bathrooms were maintained, beautiful area”

Lakes Basin Campground sits at about 6,445 feet among firs and aspens along Gray Eagle Creek on the Gold Lakes road north of Graeagle, reachable via Forest Road 24 off State Route 89 (roughly a 7-mile drive up the single-lane Gold Lakes Road from the highway). The footprint of an old mining community is still visible here weathered stonework and a set of carved steps that lead into a deep pool of Gray Eagle Creek give the loop a quiet, historic character. The loop contains 11 developed sites in total: seven sites are sized to accommodate both RVs and tents, and four are tent-only; the campground also offers family-style sites including one double-family site, and a tent-only group site that is available by reservation only. Basic campground services are in place vault toilets, drinking water, trash collection and every site is outfitted with a picnic table and a metal fire ring with grill, so you can cook over fire where permitted. The last stretch into the campground is a narrow, single-lane road about a third of a mile long, so plan vehicle size and towing accordingly and check conditions before you go. The Lakes Basin area is primarily a trail-and-water playground: over 30 miles of maintained trails radiate from the basin and connect to the Pacific Crest Trail, with many multiuse routes open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding; the 1-mile Grassy Lakes Trail departs right from the campground. A short drive or paddle brings you to Gold Lake, where a two-lane boat ramp, loading dock and day-use area provide easy access for fishing and small-boat cruising the lake holds brown and rainbow trout and mackinaw. For short side trips, Plumas Eureka State Park (about 18 miles away) offers mining history exhibits and a visitor center, while Mills Peak Fire Lookout, the Red Fir Interpretive Trail and the Frazier Falls paved overlook are all within reach for half-day outings. For up-to-date facility details, fees, seasonal openings and reservation information (beyond the tent-group reservation), contact the forest office at (530) 927-7878.
