Convict Lake Campground sits at about 7,500 feet on the shore of a 167-acre lake, with Convict Creek running through the site and stands of aspen and cottonwood lining the water. A few campsites look directly onto the lake while others sit a short walk away; overall the 48 sites are spaced fairly close together, so expect a lively campground feel rather than wide privacy. Anglers come here for rainbow and brown trout, and the lake allows power craft only with electric motors of six horsepower or less; boat rentals and a pack station are a short walk down the road at Convict Lake Resort. For people who want to explore farther afield, the 3.5-mile Lake Trail begins near the campground and the John Muir Wilderness with its high ridgelines, deep canyons and extensive trail network for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding is within easy reach. The facility is a well-organized mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites: of the 48 total sites, 37 accommodate both RVs and tents and 11 are tent-only. Campground amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, hot showers and a dump station, plus food-storage lockers that are provided for bear safety; firewood is available for purchase on site. A small commercial cluster next to the campground store, restaurant, boat rentals and additional showers at the resort adds convenience without requiring a drive. The site is located on Highway 395 between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop (the turnoff is across from Mammoth Yosemite Airport), so it's an easy stop if you're traveling that corridor; check current conditions, fees and reservation availability through the Inyo National Forest or recreation.gov before you go.
