“Campsite 004 is located beside the host's site. It is level and close to the restrooms. Old Shady Rest CG stays open a week later (3rd week) than most USFS campgrounds. ”

Carol H 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“walking distance to town, short drive to lakes. very friendly camp hosts/owners. definitely would stay there again!”

About

Old Shady Rest Campground sits in a mature Jeffrey pine stand at about 7,800 feet, a short walk from the full-service town of Mammoth Lakes and the visitor center. The site is laid out as one large loop adjacent to New Shady Rest and Pine Glen campgrounds; the facility offers 45 total campsites 45 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites and is best suited to tents and small- to medium-sized RVs. Basic creature comforts are on hand: restrooms with flush toilets, picnic tables and campfire rings at each site, bear-proof lockers for food storage, and firewood for sale on site. Showers are not located in the campground but are nearby, and town amenities shops, restaurants and event venues are within easy walking distance. For reservations, note the policy: Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. The campground is a convenient base for the eastern Sierra's many recreational options. Trailheads and routing for hikers, mountain bikers and off-road riders are close by, and winter access puts you near major skiing areas; the region's creeks and lakes also draw anglers chasing trout a short drive away. A paved walking and biking trail connects Old Shady Rest to nearby campgrounds, a town park with a playing field and skate park, and downtown Mammoth Lakes, and the area hosts seasonal events such as the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee in mid-July. Day-trip choices include Yosemite, Mono Basin and Devils Postpile National Monument. Wildlife is common around camp black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martens, pika, and numerous birds and fish so use the provided bear lockers and practice standard food-storage precautions. The campground is accessible from the Mammoth Lakes area off State Route 203 near U.S. Highway 395, roughly 300 miles north of Los Angeles and 165 miles south of Reno.
