What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (98 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Very clean and beautiful. Camp host was amazing. Truly sad that the people running that site are volunteers as opposed to a few years ago, that was not the case. ”

Brandie W 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Good campground. 3 or 4 outhouses with pit toilets. Dog friendly. Good views. People were generally quiet and respectful. Dirt road on the way in is bumpy, so plan accordingly :)”

John P 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“This is a well-designed campground, with spacious sites. Thanks to campgound host Harry, the vault toilets and campsites were spotless. This is a lovely place, eith easy accessto the Arizona Trail. ”

About

Rock Crossing Campground sits at about 7,316 feet among patches of ponderosa pine and oak on the Blue Ridge, offering cooler summer temperatures and a forested base for exploring the larger Coconino National Forest. From camp you can reach C.C. Cragin Reservoir and Knoll Lake for boating and fishing, or pick up long-distance routes such as the Arizona National Scenic Trail and the General Crook National Recreation Trail; shorter historic loops and several nearby fire lookout towers make for easy day hikes and good vantage points for birding bald eagles and osprey are often seen near the water, and larger mammals like elk, mule deer and the occasional black bear move through the area. The campground is roughly 55 miles south of Flagstaff or about 42.5 miles north of Payson along AZ-87, accessed via Forest Road 751 toward the Blue Ridge/C.C. Cragin area (GPS 34°33'51.6"N 111°13'07.5"W); the small community of Happy Jack, a short drive away, provides gas, a pair of convenience stores and a couple of restaurants, while features such as the Mogollon Rim and Tonto Natural Bridge lie within day-trip range. The site logistics are straightforward: the campground contains 35 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, with a mix of single and double sites designed to host groups (family sites are sized for up to eight people and double sites for up to 16). Expect basic, well-maintained amenities picnic tables, tent pads, campfire rings and cooking grills at each site, vault toilets, drinking water, trash collection, bear-resistant food storage lockers and on-site campground hosts but no electric hookups or showers; RVs and trailers are limited to 32 feet maximum. Standard nonelectric fees are $16.00 for 1 8 people and $32.00 for 9 16 people; groups larger than about ten people (up to 50) can reserve the nearby Moqui Group Campground. Seasonal openings, day-use rules and reservation options can change, so confirm current conditions and any access notices with Coconino National Forest before you go.
