Ponderosa Campground sits under a stand of mature ponderosa pines on the southern edge of State Route 260, a short drive east of Payson. The campground occupies the transition zone along the Mogollon Rim elevations in the area run roughly 5,000 to 7,000 feet so the setting has the cooler, open-forested character of high country rather than low desert: taller pines with a fairly open understory of juniper, oak and manzanita, and the distinctive vanilla-like scent that comes from older ponderosas. A short nature trail loops through the site for easy walks from camp, and the town of Payson is close enough for groceries, restaurants and other supplies. Scenic drives into the broader Tonto National Forest reveal steep rim escarpments, canyons and the Rim Country Lakes; Woods Canyon Lake, about 15 minutes east, is a popular spot for boating and fishing when you want to leave camp for water-based recreation. For questions about the facility call (928) 474-7900. The campground offers 48 individual campsites all are listed as suitable for both RVs and tents and the facility description also notes two group sites that can accommodate up to 25 people each. Sites are generally flat, spacious and shaded by pines, making them well suited to tent camping, RVs and picnicking. Some sites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis; payment is handled at an on-site fee machine or through the campground's mobile scan-and-pay option (no cash accepted). Check-in is at 2:00 p.m. and check-out is at 11:00 a.m. Beyond the campground you'll find extensive opportunities across Tonto National Forest for hiking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, biking, horseback riding and auto touring, with horse camping and climbing also available in the broader area.
