What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (133 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“My family and I come here at least every other year on Columbus Day weekend since they were small children. Now they are in their 40s and with two small grandsons (8 & 10) we took a trip this year for old times sake and loved it😊”

Raymond C 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful place, view of the stars in the early morning is amazing! Bathrooms could be cleaner”

kaeley f 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Love the isolation of location. Staff on site was very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. Have camped here many times thru the years. One of my favorite sites in United States. Thanks for maintaining this campground to a high standard. ”

About

Perched on a wooded ridge in Monongahela National Forest and looking down toward the 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake, Spruce Knob Lake Campground sits under a hardwood canopy with views east to 4,863-foot Spruce Knob. The summit's stone-and-steel observation tower is a short drive or hike away and gives 360-degree panoramas across the highlands; nearer the campground, one-sided red spruce, low blueberry and huckleberry cover the rocky ridgelines where frequent winds and cold fogs shape the vegetation. Hikers will find immediate access to a pleasant one-mile Big Bend River Loop from the campground and the half-mile Whispering Spruce Trail circles the higher ground near the peak; the broader Spruce Knob region contains roughly 60 miles of maintained trails for longer day hikes or backcountry routes. Trout anglers can fish Spruce Knob Lake and nearby creeks, and small boats can be launched from the lake's ramp; note there is a wooden pier providing barrier-free access, but swimming is not allowed. Practical facilities are basic and designed for a backcountry mountain experience: TOTAL CAMPSITES: 42, with 29 sites designated both RV Sites & Tent Sites and 13 Tent Sites. There are no electrical hookups; drinking water is supplied by a solar-powered system and accessible vault toilets serve the loop. A small parking area and boat ramp are located at the lake, and firewood is available for purchase on site. Because the campground is reached via forest roads off U.S. Route 33 (follow Briery Gap Road and Forest Road 112 to Forest Road 1 from Riverton, or approach from Elkins via SR-29 and FR-1), plan for mountain road travel and check current road conditions before you go. For up-to-date fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings, contact the Monongahela National Forest office or check Recreation.gov; the wider forest offers additional activities such as auto touring, wildlife viewing, picnicking and interpretive programs beyond what's available at the campground itself.
