Longest RV site listed: 35 ft.
Perched at about 9,300 feet on the Colorado Plateau, Barker Recreation Area sits under a dense canopy of aspen and spruce where summer wildflowers carpet the meadows and black bear, blue grouse, golden eagles and wild turkey are regular visitors. The centerpiece is Upper Barker Reservoir, where canoeing and kayaking are the easiest ways to reach quiet coves and where rainbow and brook trout provide good shoreline and small-boat fishing; fishing docks are available at both Upper and Lower reservoirs. Trailheads from both reservoirs open onto a network of hiking, mountain-biking and horse routes, including stretches of the non-motorized Great Western Trail that leads to nine backcountry fishing lakes. The area is also noted for strong stream fishing and vivid fall color, and its elevation and forested setting offer a markedly different feel from the red-rock country visible an hour away. The developed recreation area contains a total of 16 campsites 13 single-family sites and three group campsites and all 16 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Amenities are straightforward and useful: accessible vault toilets, bear-proof food storage lockers, fishing docks, and drinking water provided seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, and access requires a roughly 16-mile drive on Forest Road 149 off Highway 12 from Escalante; expect the last 3.4 miles to be steep, single-lane with switchbacks and turnouts, so plan vehicle size and timing accordingly. Horses are permitted in the Porter group site, and because fees, reservations and winter access can change, campers should check with the Dixie National Forest office before arriving. For day trips beyond the trees you're within about 45 minutes of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, with scenic drives along Highway 12 and longer excursions to Bryce Canyon, Kodachrome Basin and Anasazi State Park.
