“The GOOD: campsite spacious, scenic...a bit open but OK. Host was great. The BAD: recreation.gov unfortunately made us reserve the weekend rather than just one day when occupancy at the campground was probably 15%.”

Comanche Park Campground sits in an open Ponderosa pine stand about 6.5 miles west of Custer on Highway 16, making it a convenient base for exploring the southern Black Hills. The facility is small and straightforward: there are 19 total campsites, each sized to accommodate both tents and RVs (trailers included), and spaced to give a sense of room between neighbors beneath tall pines. Basic comforts are provided picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water but there are no electrical hookups, so plan for battery or generator power if you need it. The site is the closest public campground to Jewel Cave National Monument, and road access is gravel-and-paved, suitable for standard vehicles; for up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings or other details, call the campground office at (605) 574-4402. Note the campground policy that refunds are not issued for weather-related events. The surrounding Black Hills National Forest opens directly from the campground to a range of outdoor options: short hikes and longer treks, fishing in nearby streams and lakes, horseback and mountain-bike routes, and OHV riding across moderate terrain. If you're aiming higher, Black Elk Peak is within reach a granite-topped summit crowned by an old stone lookout tower and offering wide views from a distinct high point in the region. Jewel Cave, just a short drive away, is the nation's second-longest cave system and is known for calcite crystals and extensive passageways. Wildlife is a regular part of the experience here bighorn sheep on steep faces, herds of elk and deer in forest and parkland, and numerous raptors along waterways and nearby day-trip destinations such as Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial and Wind Cave National Park add more options for sightseeing and interpretive programs.
