Crooked Creek Lake sits in the rolling hills about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh near Ford City, and the park combines engineered flood-control infrastructure with a surprising variety of outdoor opportunities. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project stores and releases water to protect the lower Allegheny and Ohio rivers, and the lake's shoreline opens onto a sandy peninsula beach, a boat launch with ample trailer parking for boating and waterskiing, and miles of shoreline for anglers chasing bass, muskie, sunfish and crappie. History-minded visitors can follow the Corps' first Auto Tour Trail created with local historians and park rangers to learn about Armstrong County's one-room schools, early water-powered sawmills and Revolutionary War land grants. Long-distance hikers on the 141-mile Baker Trail cross the lake, and equestrians will find staging facilities and miles of riding trails at the Crooked Creek Horse Park just a couple of miles from the park entrance; the Crooked Creek Outdoor Discovery Center runs environmental-education programs nearby. The pavilion area itself is compact and well-equipped for day use and short stays: there are six campsites in the Crooked Creek Lake Pavilions, and each of those six sites is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents. Three named pavilions anchor the facility and give a clear feel for how the areas differ Independence Pavilion, on the beach road, sits beside a ball field and horseshoe pits with a flush restroom across the parking lot; Heritage Pavilion on Overlook Road provides a direct view of the dam and control tower with nearby horseshoe pits and a ball field plus a flush restroom within walking distance; Justice Pavilion, located behind the park office, offers a quieter pocket with a small pond, access to the park's 9-hole disc golf course and a vault toilet a short walk away. The Corps maintains several picnic areas and six picnic shelters with tables and grills throughout the park, and the site supports wildlife viewing, hiking and playground and specialized-sport opportunities. Fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability are set by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers check the park office or the Corps' website before you go for up-to-date information.
