About

Big Lake Campground sits on the western shore of its namesake lake at about 4,600 feet along Santiam Pass in the Willamette National Forest, with Mt. Washington rising on the skyline across the water. The site is shaded by alpine fir, western hemlock and lodgepole pine, and the campground's 43 sites are laid out to give easy access to the lakeshore. Of those sites, 41 are configured for both RVs and tents while 2 are tent-only, so the loop accommodates a mix of rigs and traditional campers. Vault toilets, a source of drinking water and a boat ramp are provided at the campground; for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings (high-elevation access can vary with snow), consult the Forest Service before you go. The lake itself is the focal point for activity: visitors commonly swim, sail and water-ski off the boat ramp when conditions allow, and anglers find productive water around the shoreline. On land, the Patjens Lakes Trail starts near the campground and follows Big Lake's western shore before heading south into the Mt. Washington Wilderness to circle past the Patjens Lakes a good day hike or a longer loop for backpackers. Beyond the immediate campground there are OHV routes and other trailheads, and the area is part of the McKenzie Santiam Pass corridor, a scenic route that threads together lava fields, alpine lakes and waterfalls. From Eugene, Big Lake is reached by traveling east on Highway 126 to Santiam Pass and turning onto the access roads that serve Hoodoo Ski Area and Benson Sno-Park the campground sits just off those Santiam Pass approaches.
