Afton Landing sits upstream of Chouteau Lock and Dam 17 on the McClellan-Kerr Navigation System, about six miles west of Wagoner, Oklahoma, and takes its name from the region linked to Col. Auguste P. Chouteau and the river's early navigation history. The campground occupies an oxbow off the main river channel, where sloping high banks drop to backwater pockets that are easy to reach by boat or from shore; many sites offer shaded water views and the opportunity to tie boats right at the water's edge. The surrounding mixed hardwood forest makes the site a good place for wildlife viewing, and the backwaters are popular with anglers, kayakers, and small-boat users the area's mix of boating, fishing, water sports, picnicking and camping gives families and solo visitors plenty of ways to spend a day or a weekend. Open year-round, the campground is organized into two loops and provides 23 campsites in total: 22 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site. On-site facilities include vault toilets, drinking water, a dump station, a boat ramp and a courtesy dock, a playground and a park specialized sport site, plus a popular group day-use shelter for gatherings. Practical details to note: reservations and cancellations carry fees canceling 48 hours or more before your reservation incurs a $10 cancellation fee, while cancellations made within 24 hours of arrival are subject to a late cancellation fee of $10 plus the first night's camping fee. For supplies and dining, Wagoner is the nearest city and Fort Gibson Lake and other parks are within about a 10-minute drive, making Afton Landing a convenient base for exploring the wider river corridor.
