Angel Lake Campground sits at about 8,400 feet on the East Humboldt Range, with the lake itself occupying a small basin at the foot of rugged glacial cirques that rise toward 10,000 feet. The setting is open and crisp dwarf aspens and low alpine vegetation separate sites, giving a sense of privacy but providing little shade so days can be sunlit and evenings cool. The shallow, clear water of Angel Lake is used for canoeing and supports rainbow and brook trout, making it the focal point for light-water recreation and shoreline fishing; the Smith Lake Trail begins at the campground entrance for hikers wanting to extend outings into the surrounding high country. Wildlife is a strong draw here: bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mule deer and birds of prey are commonly seen around the lake and cirques, so bring binoculars and a quiet approach for viewing. The campground contains 25 sites in total 24 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, and one site is designated for RV use only and several of those sites offer lake views. Each campsite includes a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; vault toilets are available, and there is a day-use picnic area right along the lakeshore. Angel Lake Road (State Route 231) reaches the lake's trailhead and campground about 12 miles from the city of Wells, accessible from Interstate 80; because management details such as seasonal openings, fees and reservation rules can change, check current Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest information before you go. Beyond the immediate lakeshore activities of fishing, canoeing, hiking and wildlife viewing, the broader Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor options biking, climbing, horse trails and camping, OHV use, hunting, winter sports and more so Angel Lake can be a quiet basecamp for day trips across the northeast Nevada high country.
