Coal Mine Campground sits on a broad hilltop at about 7,400 feet in the upper portion of Cibola National Forest, surrounded by a mature mix of pine, juniper and oak. The loop holds 15 campsites each designated as an RV site and able to accommodate up to 10 people so the campground works for both tent campers who bring rigs and those traveling in trailers or motorhomes. There are no utility hookups, and drinking water is not provided, so plan to arrive with a full supply; vault toilets are accessible and every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Parking spurs vary some are paved, others gravel and sites sit on gently sloping ground beneath the trees, giving a sense of dispersed, low-density camping rather than a tightly packed park. The turnoff from Grants is along New Mexico State Highway 547, roughly 10 miles northeast of town; Grants itself is about 12 miles away, where you'll find groceries, restaurants, lodging and a mining museum with gem and mineral displays (and a self-guided underground tour). Outdoor opportunities begin at the campground: the Lobo Canyon Trail starts within the loop and links into a local network of routes (note that some connecting trails remain under construction). Campers commonly use the site as a base for picnicking, scenic drives through the nearby ranges (the Sandia and Manzano mountain corridors offer long vistas and driveable routes), wildlife viewing and longer backcountry outings into Cibola and the adjacent El Malpais National Monument and Conservation Area. El Malpais is within a short drive and features lava flows, the Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center, Sandstone Bluffs Overlook and La Ventana Natural Arch; a portion of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail runs near the Zuni-Acoma corridor through the monument. Cibola National Forest and Grasslands supports a wide range of activities biking, horseback riding, OHV use, winter sports among them so check local trail status and seasonal access before you go. Reservations are handled through the NRRS: payment in full is charged when you complete a reservation, a $10 service fee may apply if you change or cancel reservations and late cancellations can incur additional fees; a $10 non-refundable online reservation fee may be charged for some facilities see the NRRS reservation policy for full details.
