Slide Group Area sits on the rim of the Sacramento Mountains roughly 20 miles east of Alamogordo and about two miles south of the mountain village of Cloudcroft, offering panoramic views down into the Tularosa Basin from an elevation near 9,000 feet. The single group campsite occupies a wildflower-dusted meadow edged by mixed evergreens and aspens, where deer, elk and a variety of birds are commonly seen; nights are frequently clear for stargazing. The site is part of the 1.1 million acres of Lincoln National Forest the same forest where the original Smokey Bear cub was rescued and lies close enough to the Sunspot Scenic Byway that visitors can plan short drives to the Sunspot solar observatory, White Sands National Monument and Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. This facility is designed for groups: there is one group site that accepts both RVs and tents and can accommodate up to 90 people, with parking room for about 12 trailers or 50 automobiles. The site is a non-electric group area; rates are $100 per night for groups of 1 40 people and $125 per night for groups of 41 90 people. Slide Group Area backs directly onto the Rim Trail, with the northern sections popular for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding and the southern stretch open to motorcycles/other off-highway vehicles; an open meadow adjoining the campsite provides space for casual sports like volleyball or football. On a practical note, the campground's convenient road access and overlook make it straightforward to load gear and stage activities, while the wider Lincoln National Forest offers additional opportunities for hunting, fishing, winter sports, picnicking and other outdoor recreation.
