“Nice small campground to get away from people. I loved it and will definitely go back again!”
“Site was clean, water delicious, bathroom pretty clean, other campers respected quiet hour times”
“Great campsite I would stay here again. Because it's close to rt.113, you do occasionally hear and see cars going by. Definitely walk or drive up to Basin Pond, a beautiful spot.”

WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Cold River Campground sits in a quiet corner of the White Mountain National Forest about 15 miles north of Fryeburg, Maine, accessed from Highway 113. The facility is very small and organized around a single loop: TOTAL CAMPSITES: 8, and all 8 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites, so you'll find a close-knit, low-density layout tucked into mixed hardwood and pine stands. Campsites are within walking distance of Evans Brook and the 23-acre Basin Pond, and basic amenities on site include accessible restrooms, a hand pump for water, and nearby picnic areas; there are no showers or dump station. The campground's rustic character and limited infrastructure make it best suited to self-sufficient campers and smaller RVs or tents who are comfortable without hookups. Recreation radiates outward from this basecamp: the short drive to nearby Basin Campground connects you with the 4.5-mile Basin Trail, and a network of other hiking and mountain-biking routes (including trails leading into the Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness) are close by. Basin Pond offers trout fishing and calm water for canoeing, while the larger White Mountain National Forest supports a wide range of activities biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, swimming and winter sports among them and provides habitat for moose, white-tailed deer, black bear and nearly 200 bird species including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. Services such as groceries, gas and restaurants are available in Fryeburg, Gilead and Stow. Because Cold River is small and remote, check current fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and road conditions with the White Mountain National Forest before you go (see the Forest Service recreation pages for updates).
