“It was a nice and quiet campground. Restrooms're clean, camping spots are well maintained. Cell service is very weak. No shower, potting water provided. You can hear the waterfall sound. Great place for camping and hiking in White Mountains.”
“Campground was beautiful, private and quiet. Potable water was delicious and the restrooms were exceptionally clean. Would highly recommend. ”

WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Sugarloaf 1 sits in the northern reaches of the White Mountain National Forest, just east of the small service town of Twin Mountain and at the western approach to Mount Washington. The campground occupies a stretch of land along the Zealand River and is a short drive from the cold, cascading Ammonoosuc River, so fishing for brook trout or a summer wade are easy to work into a day. Thick hardwoods and pines enclose the single-loop campground, and wildlife is part of the rhythm here moose, white-tailed deer and black bear are all present in the forest, and birders come for species like the rare Bicknell's thrush. If you want more developed recreation, Bretton Woods and the Mount Washington Hotel are nearby for ski-area access and services, the Appalachian Trail and numerous hiking and biking routes radiate out from the area, and the Cog Railway on Mount Washington is within reasonable driving distance. The campsite is intentionally rustic and small: there are 17 campsites in total, with 4 sites designated for both RVs and tents and 13 tent-only sites, all spaced around one loop for privacy. Facilities are basic but functional accessible restrooms and a hand pump for potable water and there is no on-site dump station; the nearest showers are about 10 miles away. Road access follows State Highway 302 east from Twin Mountain for roughly 3 miles, with a short turn onto Zealand Road to reach the campground; it's also about a 33-mile drive north from North Conway along the same highway. Because specific fees, reservation windows and seasonal closures can change, check the White Mountain National Forest website before you go for current policies; bring supplies from Twin Mountain's general store if you need groceries, fuel or meals.
