Fenske Lake Campground sits on the shore of a 130-acre lake amid the dense hardwood and pine of northeastern Minnesota, about 10 miles east of Ely along the Echo Trail. The site is small and quiet 16 total campsites 11 sites accommodate both RVs and tents and 5 are tent-only laid out widely around a single large loop so most sites get partial to full shade and a few look out over the water. The campground is tent-friendly but most sites do not accommodate large RVs, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before arriving. Families will find a short, roughly 1-mile nature trail that winds through the pines, a grassy swimming beach, an open log shelter for bad weather, and a small picnic area; there's also a group campsite that sleeps 10 25 people set on a rock ledge above the lake with broad views. Practical amenities aimed at water users include a boat ramp and an accessible fishing pier. Fenske is a convenient base for paddling and fishing it's on a Superior National Forest canoe circle route and close to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness access points so canoeing and kayaking are especially popular here. Anglers use the ramp and pier for bass, northern pike, crappie and sunfish; wildlife viewing and birdwatching are common along the shoreline and in the surrounding forest. Beyond the campground, Superior National Forest offers auto touring, biking, winter sports, additional swimming beaches, fishing piers and picnic areas, and an extensive trail and waterway network for day trips or longer backcountry excursions. The Forest Service sets fees, reservation rules and seasonal dates for campsites, so check the Superior National Forest website or contact the local ranger district before you go to confirm current policies and any access requirements.
