“The campgrounds and surrounding environs are very well-managed and peaceful to be in. The bathrooms are very well maintained and clean. Sunrises and sunsets filtering through the trees are absolutely magical.”

Monument Campground occupies a red pine plantation beside the AuSable River valley and was one of the first campgrounds built in the Huron National Forest in 1909. The site is a fully accessible camping area where large oaks and red pines shade each site and provide a sense of seclusion despite the campground's convenient location about 15 miles west of Oscoda along River Road (the River Road National Scenic Byway). There are 19 total campsites, and all 19 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents. Basic amenities at the campground include pressurized drinking water, vault toilets, trash collection and grills, and a campground host is onsite to answer questions. Nearby, the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center offers additional visitor services, a gift shop and educational programs. Recreation is heavily tied to the river and the byway: campers can walk onto the Highbanks Hiking Trail from the campground or follow stretches of the 22-mile River Road National Scenic Byway that overlook the AuSable River valley. The Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center beside the campground brings local history to life try climbing through a replica log jam, handling a peavey, cutting a wooden "cookie" with a cross-cut saw or watching interpretive videos about lumbering life. Beyond the immediate campground, the Huron-Manistee National Forests offer a wide range of activities including auto touring, hiking, biking, fishing, boating and wildlife viewing, with Lake Huron and the AuSable River close at hand for additional water-based recreation. Fees, reservation windows and seasonal availability can change, so check current information with the Forest Service or the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center before you go; the onsite host can also help with local questions once you arrive.
