Swan Lake Campsites sit along the shore of a 169-acre inland lake in the Munising/Rapid River-Manistique portion of Hiawatha National Forest, surrounded by mixed hardwoods and pines that give each site a private, wooded character. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 4, and all four are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents but the setting is intentionally rustic: there is NO drinking water on-site and only three primitive toilets (at sites 1 and 2, and between 3 and 4). Site sizes and layouts vary: Site 1 is a compact 60 x 30 ft knoll on the west shore suitable for a single family (maximum 8 people) and has the public boat access nearby; Sites 2 4 are larger (Site 2 is 65 x 50 ft, Site 3 is 65 x 35 ft, Site 4 is 80 x 70 ft) and each can hold up to 16 people. Practical notes for rigs: trailers are not recommended on Site 1 unless staged in the parking area at the base of the knoll, turn-around room at Site 2 is very limited, and Sites 3 and 4 are adjacent and can be reserved together for larger groups. Horse camping is allowed, with allowances per site of Site 1 (2 horses), Site 2 (2), Site 3 (4) and Site 4 (6). The lake is actively used for swimming and angling all campsites have excellent swimming areas and the fishery supports largemouth and smallmouth bass as well as bluegill and pumpkinseed; remember Michigan fishing licenses are required. Boaters can back in at Site 1 and there's a public launch to Steuben Lake nearby, while the Pine Marten Run Trail (a non-motorized corridor) runs by these sites, giving direct access to horse, bike and hiking trails. Swan Lake is one of the most requested sites in the designated campsite program, so permits can be competitive; for current fees, seasonal openings, reservation rules and other details contact the local ranger district at (906) 474-6442 or the Hiawatha National Forest general number at (906) 387-2512. If you need supplies, bait, rentals or trailheads, expect those services roughly a mile or so from the campsites (bait shops, general store, gas, a pay phone, a fishing pier, and kayak/canoe rentals are available nearby).
