10419 PERRY PARK DRIVE
Open in Google Maps ↗
Slough Creek Campground sits on the edge of Perry Lake and serves as the lake's largest and most popular recreation area, a short drive from Topeka (about 17 miles northeast along US-24 to Perry) and within easy reach of Lawrence and Kansas City. The campground contains 176 reservable campsites each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and offers a spectrum of site types from walk-in tent spots to sites with full electric and water hookups. Sites are organized into multiple loops, including Boak (21 sites), East (1 site), Locu (17 sites), and Sout (57 sites), with the remaining sites arranged in other campground loops; a private group camp is also available for larger gatherings that need separation from the main loops. Note the campground gate policy: on Friday and Saturday nights and throughout holiday weekends the park entrance gates are closed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; an exit-only lane remains open, no late entry is permitted after 10:00 p.m., and only park staff or emergency personnel are allowed through the gate after that time. Sites are reservable check the park's official reservation system for current availability, seasonal openings, and fees. The recreation options at Slough Creek extend beyond the campsite: the campground sits with the lake on one side and a dense forest canopy on the other, providing immediate access to water-based and woodland activities. Slough Creek is the on-site trailhead for the Perry Lake National Recreation Trail (a roughly 29 30 mile loop that follows much of the eastern shoreline), and the Thunder Ridge Trail, a short 2.5-mile loop, begins just outside the main campground gate for a quick hike with varied terrain. Perry Lake itself (created by the 1969 dam) covers about 12,000 surface acres with roughly 159 miles of shoreline and is known regionally for sailing though power boating, canoeing, and other water sports are common and for plentiful fishing (white crappie, flathead catfish, walleye, white bass, channel catfish and sauger). The broader area includes approximately 27,000 acres of public land managed for wildlife turkey, deer, quail, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, duck and geese so birding and wildlife viewing are good bets. For practical travel, the campground is reached from Highway 24 in Perry by taking Ferguson Road north about seven miles, then following Slough Creek Road to the park entrance.
