What guests say

“The location is great! Secluded and not a lot of traffic. ”

Dawn M 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice campsite , very beautiful and peaceful”

Curt J 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“This is a hidden gem. We've stayed at countless state and national campgrounds, and this is a great site. The bathrooms and showers are outdated, but if your camper is self contained, this is a campground to consider.”

About

Riverside East Campground sits on the east bank of the Neosho River in the low, rolling hills of eastern Kansas, within a 168-acre park that is part of John Redmond Reservoir. The setting alternates between open agricultural vistas fields of wheat and corn visible from hilltops and stretches of native prairie grasses such as bluestem, Indian grass, and switch grass. Lower draws and shoreline pockets hold elm, black walnut, hickory, ash, hackberry, cottonwood and cedar, giving campsites a mix of sun and dappled shade. The campground offers 43 total campsites: 41 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites, plus two large picnic shelters for family gatherings or group use. Practical details are straightforward: check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out is at 4 p.m. Reservations and fee handling are available via QR Codes on-site, by phone through recreation.gov, or by online reservation check recreation.gov for current fees and seasonal availability. The town of Burlington is the closest service hub for gas, groceries and medical care. Recreation at Riverside East makes the reservoir the main draw: John Redmond Reservoir totals around 30,000 acres and supports boating, water sports and considerable fishing and hunting opportunities. Anglers will find white crappie, white bass, channel and flathead catfish and a variety of sunfish, while several trails run along the shore and through the hills for hiking and wildlife viewing. Off-highway vehicle riders can use the Otter Creek ATV area at the west end of the dam, a 140-acre trail system open from sunrise to sunset, and the broader park also includes picnic areas, a playground and specialized sport sites. Campsite-level amenities are oriented toward convenient access to these activities rather than resort services plan around trailheads and launch points, and use Burlington or online resources to confirm rules, seasons and any reservation details before you go. For access, the reservoir is reached north of Burlington off US-75 and west along the embankment road to the park entrance.
