Dam West Campground sits on the southern shore of Carlyle Lake, roughly 50 miles east of St. Louis, where broad open water and low rolling shoreline define the landscape. The campground offers 108 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, and the day-use and marina facilities make it straightforward to plan a water-centered stay: boat ramps, courtesy docks, on-site marina and a boat storage facility are all part of the recreation area. Families will find an on-site playground and an amphitheater for educational programs, and the Dam West Spillway and Day Use Area are nearby for extra shoreline access. The Carlyle Lake Visitor Center is located in the same recreation area and features nature exhibits and a 215-gallon aquarium of native fish, while a multi-use biking and walking trail at the dam is a short drive away and connects by foot or bike across the dam to Dam East facilities and the McNair Group Area. The lake itself completed in 1967 and covering about 26,000 acres is known for sailing and hosts annual races and regattas; it supports a wide range of water sports and fishing (bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, carp and walleye are all present). Wildlife viewing is strong here year-round, with migratory waterfowl and six established Watchable Wildlife Sites (several with viewing towers) around the lake. Before you go, note the reservation policies: if you make a reservation, failing to arrive or to cancel by check-out time on the day after your scheduled arrival is treated as a no-show and carries a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the reservation; cancellations made the day before or on the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total paid). One-night reservations canceled will forfeit the full amount paid and are not assessed an additional service fee. Access from I-70 is convenient: head south on State Route 127 into Carlyle, turn east on William Road, then follow Lake Road toward the dam to reach Dam West.
