“This was a beautiful campground; however, the sites were a little small, there was a bit of road noise, and when we visited, the bathroom was out of order due to vandalism. ”

Montpelier Canyon Campground sits at about 6,400 feet along Montpelier Creek, three miles east of Montpelier, Idaho, just off U.S. Highway 89. The site is small and rustic, shaded and enclosed by dense stands of willow that help soften highway noise while the creek runs alongside the loop. There are 15 family campsites in all: 13 sites can accommodate both RVs and tents and two are tent-only. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, vault toilets are provided, and there is no drinking water on site plan to bring your own supply. Driveways are narrow and campsites are compact, so larger RVs and trailers may have difficulty maneuvering; visitors should check individual site descriptions for maximum vehicle length before arriving. The campground is primarily a base for creek fishing and short excursions to nearby water and trail opportunities. Montpelier Creek is regularly fished for rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout, and Montpelier Reservoir about five miles away offers a boat ramp for boating, canoeing and additional fishing. If you're willing to drive a bit farther, Bear Lake (on the Utah Idaho border) is within about 35 minutes and provides expanded boating, swimming and trail access. Beyond the immediate area, Caribou Targhee National Forest supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits including hiking, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle use, wildlife viewing, hunting and winter sports; check with Forest Service or recreation reservation sites for up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings, and any access restrictions before you go.
