Upper Coffee Pot Campground sits on a floatable stretch of the Henry's Fork in Island Park, Idaho, at about 6,300 feet, where lodgepole pines edge the river and many sites look out directly over the water. The campground is small 15 sites total and every site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; single and double sites are available and several sites include 50-amp electric hookups. Each campsite has a picnic table, a metal fire ring and grill, and some sites offer direct river access. Roads and parking spurs are gravel; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, and the on-site host sells firewood. Guided nature walks are offered Saturday mornings through the summer (check the campground bulletin board for time and meeting place). The site is reached from Highway 20 in the Island Park area via Forest Road 130 (a short gravel spur), and because the campground sits at higher elevation visitors should check current road and weather conditions as well as up-to-date fee and reservation information on the Forest Service or Recreation.gov pages before arrival. The Henry's Fork is the campground's centerpiece and shapes most recreational opportunities: the river offers excellent fly-fishing for rainbow and brook trout and is popular for tubing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting. Coffee Pot Rapids, just downstream, are rated Class III and attract paddlers looking for whitewater play, while gentler floats such as the roughly three-hour Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail wind through scenery where moose, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes are often seen. A 2.5-mile Coffee Pot Rapids Trail starts in the campground and follows the riverbank; the broader Island Park/Caribou-Targhee National Forest area also supports miles of multiuse trails, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the Nez Perce Trail, plus opportunities for biking, horseback riding, OHV use, boat access at nearby Henry's Lake and Island Park Reservoir, winter sports and abundant wildlife viewing. Major nearby destinations include the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (with Upper and Lower Mesa Falls) to the south, Harriman State Park with more than 20 miles of trails, Henry's Lake State Park to the north, and the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park about a half-hour's drive from Island Park for day trips.
