“Island View host are friendly, courteous, prompt and willing to help. We have stayed there often with the same service. This trip however had some disappointment. The restrooms were filthy. They had a lot of bugs and spiders with well established webs the entire stay. ”

Island View Park sits on Rathbun Lake in the gently rolling hills of the Chariton River Valley, about nine miles northwest of Centerville and eight miles southwest of Moravia. The campground occupies open grassy draws dotted with shade trees along the lake shoreline, and its position on Rathbun known for steady prevailing winds makes the area popular with sailors as well as powerboaters. Island View is a large, family-oriented facility with 188 total campsites (187 family sites plus one group site); every site is equipped with electric hookups and all sites accommodate both RVs and tents. On-site conveniences include flush and pit toilets, warm showers, drinking water and a dump station, and the waterfront setup is supported by a boat ramp, dock and marina. Families will also find playgrounds, a horseshoe pit and three group picnic sites close to the campsites. Fishing and water recreation are central to the Island View experience: anglers commonly target crappie, channel catfish, walleye and largemouth bass, and the nearby Rathbun Fish Hatchery (open for self-guided tours Monday through Friday year-round) supplies hundreds of thousands of catfish and walleye to the lake each year. Wildlife viewing is strong here bald eagles, white-tailed deer, Canada geese and wild turkey are regular sightings and the broader Rathbun area offers a long list of activities from hiking, biking and auto touring to swimming, water sports and winter pursuits. Southern Iowa's only Off Highway Vehicle Park lies about 20 minutes away on the south bank of the South Fork Chariton River and occupies nearly 125 acres in an abandoned rock quarry for those seeking OHV riding. Honey Creek Resort and other private concessions are also in the Rathbun area. For up-to-date information on fees, reservation procedures and seasonal openings, check with the park office or the official park website before you go; the campground is accessed from Highway 5 north of Centerville with short county-road approaches to the lake.
