North Overlook Camp sits on the shore of Lake Red Rock, the largest lake in Iowa formed by the Des Moines River, and is a short drive southwest of Pella (about 10 minutes) and roughly 15 minutes from Knoxville. The campground is set among hardwood forests that drop to the water's edge, so most sites feel shaded and offer direct views or quick access to the shoreline; the sandy North Overlook Beach is within a quarter mile, and several mapped water trails run along the shore for kayaks and canoes. Boaters will find ample open water for cruising, water skiing and swimming, while anglers target crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike and bluegill. Birders and wildlife watchers come for the seasonal movement of American white pelicans in spring and fall and for the significant numbers of bald eagles that concentrate on the lake in winter (November through March); white-tailed deer, wild turkey and other small mammals are commonly seen around the campground. A paved hiking and biking trail in the park links to nearby recreation areas and provides a solid route for cycling and long walks. The campground offers 49 total campsites 43 sites configured for both RVs and tents and six primitive tent-only sites so groups with mixed rigs or pure tent campers can usually find suitable space. The RV/tent sites include 50-amp electric hookups; on-site services include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water and a dump station, and children have a playground close by. Interpretive programs and environmental-education opportunities are available through the Lake Red Rock project, and the Corps of Engineers maintains up-to-date information on seasonal conditions and facilities. Reservations and changes are handled through recreation.gov (or by phone at 1-877-444-6777); a $10 service fee is deducted from any refund for cancellations or changes, and late cancellations may incur additional charges. To reach North Overlook, head southwest from Pella on County Highway T-15 for a few miles and follow signs to the campground.
