“Nice campground, not crowded, clean, and quiet. Camp host was nice and helpful.”
“We had a wonderful Weekend camping. The facilities were clean and close by. Everyone was friendly and the lake and path around was beautiful. Site 8 was secluded and large. Would definitely stay again!”

Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area sits high in a mountain valley of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, about 80 miles north of Atlanta and a short drive from the small community of Suches and the town of Blairsville. The developed campground contains a total of 34 campsites: 24 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, nine tent-only sites, and one glamping site. Sites are arranged in two loops; the North Loop (sites 21 37) is open November through March, and fees for those sites are temporarily reduced because water is not available. Showers, flush and vault toilets, grills, picnic tables and lantern posts are provided throughout the campground, and water and electric hookups are specifically available at Site #12, 13, 14 and 15. There is no dump station on site (Vogel State Park nearby offers a dump station for a nominal fee). A rental cabin a short walk from the lake sleeps up to 12 and includes basic beds, a kitchen with refrigerator, electric stove and microwave, a living room with a wood stove (no wood provided), and a bathroom with flush toilet and shower; guests must supply their own bed and bath linens. Outdoor opportunities here revolve around the 18-acre Lake Winfield Scott, which was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and forms the headwaters of Cooper Creek. The lake permits hand-powered boats and electric motors only; a boat ramp and an accessible fishing dock provide year-round access for anglers chasing trout, bass, catfish, perch and brim. A designated swimming area with a bathhouse, picnic tables and a playground sits at the beach, and day-use pavilions are available by reservation. Short trails within the recreation area include a 0.4-mile lakeshore walk, plus the Jarrard Gap Trail (1.0 mile) and Slaughter Creek Trail (2.7 miles), both of which begin here and connect to the Appalachian Trail for longer hikes. Expect to see deer, wild turkey, songbirds and occasionally black bear in the surrounding forest; for other recreational options such as mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV routes, or visiting nearby fire lookouts and visitor centers, the broader Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest offers many additional opportunities. Check the Forest Service website or contact the recreation area for current fees, reservation details and seasonal updates before you go.
