Perched at about 10,900 feet along the South Fork of Clear Creek, Guanella Pass Campground sits roughly seven miles south of Georgetown on the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway, a road that traces an old wagon route between the mining towns of Georgetown and Grant. The campground is divided into two loops by the county road and the creek, and it contains 17 sites in total: nine sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, one is for RVs only, and seven are tent-only. Most sites are out in the open with a handful of tent pads tucked among spruce trees; every site comes with a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill. Roads through the campground are gravel, potable water is available from hand pumps, and basic sanitation is provided by vault toilets and central trash dumpsters there are no utility hookups, and because the byway is narrow and winding large RVs are not recommended. The campground is a simple, high-elevation basecamp for fishing and hiking rather than a developed resort: trout anglers will find fishable water right on the South Fork of Clear Creek, and hikers can reach Silver Dollar Lake via a trail that climbs above treeline (the lake is not reachable by vehicle). Beyond the immediate sites, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests offer auto touring, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, horseback routes and seasonal winter sports along several scenic byways, including nearby routes that climb to high alpine country. Before you go, check current road and campground status with the Forest Service weather and snow can shorten the season at this elevation and confirm any fees or reservation rules; also plan for quick weather changes and thinner air at nearly 11,000 feet, and expect basic, self-reliant camping rather than full-service amenities.
