Stove Prairie Campground sits on the banks of the Cache la Poudre River about 26 miles northwest of Fort Collins along Highway 14, framed by stands of ponderosa pine and aspen where the canyon opens from dense forest into grassy meadows and steep mountain slopes. The campground has nine single-family sites in total: five sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, while four are walk-to tent-only sites. Each campsite features a 12-by-15 foot tent pad, a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; accessible vault toilets are provided and several sites are designed with accessibility in mind. Dead-and-downed wood may be gathered in the surrounding forest, or you can purchase firewood from the campground host, and a host is usually on site to answer questions about local conditions. The river is the campground's main draw the Cache la Poudre is designated Colorado's first National Wild and Scenic River and offers whitewater rafting and trout fishing for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout right from nearby access points. Trails in the surrounding area support day hikes, mountain biking and horseback riding, including the Mt. McConnel Trail, the William R. Kreutzer National Recreation Trail and the Young Gulch Trail, and the setting is good for birding and wildlife viewing. Beyond the immediate campground the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland provide a wider range of recreational opportunities from auto touring and climbing to winter sports and OHV routes so check the Forest Service website or contact the local ranger district for current fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and trail conditions before you go.
