Kathy B ★ 4 · Aug 2024Love this spot. It would be great if the showers at Elk Creek were operational again. Is there anything that can be done to make that happen?

East Elk Creek Group Campsite sits at about 7,800 feet on the north side of US Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose, roughly a half-mile west of Elk Creek. The site fronts the quieter water of East Elk Creek rather than the big reservoir, so groups can spread out for picnics, kayak or canoe launches, or creekside fishing without the boat traffic you find on Blue Mesa. Blue Mesa Reservoir itself is close by and supports Colorado's largest population of land-locked Kokanee salmon, while the higher walls of Morrow Point and Crystal Reservoirs rise further upstream, offering stark, open views and water-based access across the Curecanti system. For walkers and hikers, the nearby Dillon Pinnacles Trail provides the closest marked route into the surrounding rock and sage country, and the campsite is also positioned just off the wind-surfing zone in Cebolla Basin, making it convenient for windsurfers, paddlers and anglers who want to move between creek access and the reservoir boat ramps. Facilities at East Elk Creek are built for groups: there is a single designated group campsite on the site inventory that accepts both RVs and tents and is intended for parties of 9 up to 50 people. A public boat ramp and inspection station at Elk Creek are less than a mile away, so launching boats or checking watercraft is straightforward from camp. Specifics on fees, reservations, seasonal openings, and any vehicle or length limits are not provided here, so groups should confirm current policies and make any necessary bookings through the Curecanti National Recreation Area pages or Recreation.gov before arriving. Beyond the immediate creek activities, the broader recreation area supports auto touring, boating, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, swimming and wildlife viewing, so East Elk makes a practical base for a range of outdoor pursuits within Curecanti.
